Giving Opportunities

For Our ALUMNI AND FRIENDS

Support Your Department

The Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering is grateful for the many ways the NPRE Alumni and friends share their time and talents with the Department. Sharing your corporate message and needs with our undergraduate students, or your lab research activities with the graduate students in their weekly seminars helps us encourage and develop our students full understanding of the exciting work to be done in the various fields we teach. Including NPRE students in your campus recruiting activities lets them know how very important their degree(s) will be.

In the last few years a number of new giving opportunities have emerged which directly assist students in the Department. They are:

The Roy A. Axford Undergraduate Scholarship is presented to a continuing student of high academic ability and achievement. This scholarship was established in the Spring of 2002 by a number of students and research colleagues of Dr. Roy A. Axford in his honor.

The Barclay G. Jones Endowment Fund was established in honor of Dr. Jones, an icon of the University of Illinois nuclear engineering program since its inception. Dr. Jones earned his master's degree and PhD at the University of Illinois, and has made his career here, helping to shape the present day Department of Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering. The Jones Endowment is the continued effort of recent NPRE graduates who also established the Catherine Pritchard Undergraduate Scholarship. The Jones endowment will be used in support of both undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships in NPRE.

The George H. Miley LENR Undergraduate Scholarship was established by Prof. George H. Miley in 2004, to be presented to a highly motivated continuing undergraduate student in the Department.

The Catherine Pritchard Undergraduate Scholarship was established by a group of recent NPRE graduates to honor Catherine Pritchard, a long time staff member in the NPRE Student Services Office. It is presented to a student who has shown academic ability and activities leadership during his or her first three years, to be used during the senior year of study.

The Bruce W. Spencer Endowment Fund was established to continue Spencer's legacy of education in the context of experimental research related to reactor safety. This new endowment fund was created through the generous gifts of some of those who attended the Nuclear Engineering program at the University of Illinois with Dr. Spencer, colleagues at Argonne National Lab, and family and friends in his community. Presently it provides a $500/year award for an outstanding NPRE student, but the goal is to create a fully endowed fund.

In addition, The Marvin Wyman and Felix Adler Fund, which is an unrestricted fund named for the first two professors, hired in the Fall of 1958, to build the Nuclear Engineering Department. This is an unrestricted fund used for scholarships, fellowships, and special projects of the Department.

The Department's Nuclear Engineering Unrestricted Fund is used to recruit undergraduate and graduate students and update student research areas. Most recently it was used to update the classroom with state of the art equipment, and remodel an undergraduate laboratory.

Donations can be made by sending your gift, the name of the Fund you wish to give to, and your contact information to the University of Illinois Foundation, P.O. Box 3429, Champaign IL 61826-9916, or using the online giving service of the University of Illinois Foundation. Please make sure your intent of the gift is very clear when you make a gift to the Department.
